In 2009, HBO premiered the documentary
The World According to Ion B, about a homeless Romanian collage artist. Ion Barladeanu began creating cinema-inspired collages in the 1970s, criticizing the Ceaușescu regime.
He had to hide his works because, at that time, they could have landed him in prison. After the regime's fall, Barladeanu became homeless until, in 2007, a young gallery owner—who said Ion's lifestyle reminded him of Charles Bukowski—took notice of his art. His works then gained international fame. One of our friends was lucky enough to meet the artist, who was cheerfully drinking beer and chatting with visitors at his exhibition, surrounded by his truly fantastic pieces.
